View Full Version : What computer you have?

As the topic says ^ Do you build the parts or buy the whole computer package from shop? What hardware you have..

This built computer I have:
17" LCD monitor
120gb hard disk
512mb Ram
Pentium 4 2.8GHz
Microsoft keyboard & optical mouse

We have only that computer faster than old one. I hardly share with my brother so I am looking to buy another computer for me.

I want to have:
20" Dell LCD widescreen flat display
Microsoft keyboard / optical mouse
Ram? Don't know
Storage? Don't know

I also wanted Power MAC but I don't want to spend with parents' money. Better to buy with my own money.

Whoa Windows 3.1 and 95! Can you take a screenshot of Windows 3.1? I'd like to see what Win 3.1 looks like.

Why not sell old computers and get $$$ money :D

Vox Pelli

I don't think I could get any money for those ;) They are kind of wrecked. My laptops on/off button is broken and I fixed it in a quite ugly way ;) My Windows 3.1 computer only starts every second time and are there really a market for such computers? I am also too attached to Windows 3.1 to get rid of that computer and my laptop is the only "portable" computer I posses... I had a Nokia 16 mhz 386 computer which I gave away and I did the same with another old computer recently.

I'm sorry but I can't take a screenshot right now - I don't have that computer set up because of lack of space and my high school project is due to wednesday so I better write like hell until then :S

Windows 3.1x is however the best Windows I have used because of it's stability and close relationship with DOS. I grew up with this OS and it was the only OS I used until 5 years ago. The only negative thing with 3.1 is that I haven't found out how to use internet with it ;) I think I need 3.11. I would like to test Windows 286 also, I have the original floppies but I haven't had time to test them...

Some screenies I found:
Installing some drivers (http://www.granneman.com/images/windows_3.1_screenshot.gif)
You didn't have a desktop in Windows 3.1, instead the shortcuts were placed in the program manager (http://www.osdata.com/system/ui/screens/win31.jpg)

Vox Pelli: I think Win 3.1 only had support for dialup connections (http://www.logicalsky.com/Windows31_FAQ.htm#_Hlk447884458). You can try setting up a DSL connection (http://www.scrounge.org/tips/wfwg/index.html), but you'll probably find that you need Windows for Workgroups (Win 3.11) due to incompatibility/unavailability of drivers for Win 3.1. To get a network going (http://www.windowsnetworking.com/j_helmig/win31.htm) you'll need some DOS drivers (http://www.computing.net/windows31/wwwboard/forum/10423.html).

Vox Pelli

I will do that some day - hopefully I in one way or antoher can connect it with a null-modem cable through another of my computers to the internet.

inno: kickass computer you got there. You are using three 19" monitors with ONE computer? That's wickedly nice ;)

nemus: Well - it's a nice CPU you got at least ;)

I can btw add that my computers all are built by the shops where they are bought...

No problem. Ah, I think I got that similar, my uncle gave me his old computer when I was little. He wrote down the DOS commands so I could type. It was all black and white screen <dir>, <c:/document> thingy, haha how weird!

inno, why are you using 3 monitors together? It's too long widescreen :S

My current computer is okay, its a laptop and I bought it for $500 (Labor day special).. its all in the servers if you ask me however..

PowerBook G4 12" 1.5GHZ 1.2GB RAM, 100GB HD, 250GB External HD, 19" Acer (piece of s***!), Apple keyboard, iCurve stand, Microsoft mouse, and Altec speakers.

Also: 400MHz Celeron no-name box with Windows XP for basic IE 6 testing and whatnot.

Ah, Macs. I've been a fanboy since my first one (Performa 550 with 33 blazing MHz!) I'm looking to get a base-level MacBook (after they learn how to use thermal paste) and a 17" iMac some day. College student budgets suck!

Also, the Acer monitor is nice, but it died on me a month ago and I have yet to get it back from Acer's "repair shop". Their support is absolutely awful. I need to call and find out where my monitor is. Halo is no fun on this 12" screen.

(P.S. Anyone know if Halo runs well on MacBooks?)

Watercooled, fanless, completely custom setup box. Took me a few weeks to build up and customize everything the way I wanted. The case had to be heavily modified to support all the water cooling features I wanted, and I custom routered out the logo although I'd recommend getting someone else to do it (after doing it myself). The large red thing on the side is the radiator.

Yeah, I ran into some "hilarious" problems with the power consumption. I have switches mounted on the front for all the lights. However, when I turn them on it throws my graphics card into "slow as molasses" mode. I have a 6800 Ultra (one of the first crummy editions) that has the dual power plugs. The stupid thing draws so much power than even flicking on one of the lightswitches throws the flag in the video card drivers that it isn't getting enough power and downclocks itself.

Only <sarcasm>mildly</sarcasm> annoying :P

Damn, Im ashamed to say I havn't even got a clue what makes up my computer but I know its starting to slow down lately. I bought it from a shop who custom made it back in the days I used to enjoy coding classic arcade style games on the PC. They told me it would be able to handle all the operations and what not. I have a bl**dy small widescreen which I hate and I think I was ripped off as it can't even play a game like the old black and white without stuttering or freezing. It does the job for my websites and can just about keep up with photoshop.

I am going to take a wild guess (sarcasm) and assume you are running some version of Microsoft Windoes as your operatiing system. For basic CPU and Memory amounts inside your computer, go to: Start => (Settings =>) Control Panel => System.

This should tell you how fast and what kind of processor you have, as well as how much random access memory is in your computer.

It may be time to upgrade or buy a whole new computer (if yoiu are currently dissatisfied).

Good luck!
