So we are building a new creative department and they have given me a small budget for design resources. What are some essentials. Like books, magazines, software etc. Anything that would be great to have around the office on a day to day.

Dreamweaver & Photoshop, they are pretty expensive but you'll find them the most used tools in the creative department.

Also, sign up for an account on www.sxc.hu It's free and you can find alsorts of stock photos.

for more stock photos then sign up at www.istockphoto.com - that site isn't free to download the images, but it has more options.

As long as you have them and this (http://welovecss.com) site bookmarked then you'll be fine!

Are you just doing web work? You may want to add Adobe Flash in there.

If you're doing print work you'll want to check out Adobe InDesign and Illustrator.

Not sure about the books and magazines. I usually just search the internet or read blogs for information. If its web related www.fullasagoog.com is a nice collection of blogs concerning the web and adobe products.
