Default Putting content on the left/right of a form

Hello guys,

I am a newbie and I have tried to understand how the code works, but no luck

I am attempting to use this guy's form, but I can't seem to put my list menu or picture on the left or right of this form, or even background image, it looks like the whole area is blocked!

I noticed that he forgot to close the div layout/strip but apart from that I don't know what is causing the form to overtake the left and right sides

Please see his sample here

Many thanks in advance!
