The animations seem okay, but on my system, they are very slow and jerky.

Cool that you've tried it out! What browser and which version are you using? Also what kind of computer do you have (CPU performance, memory)? Javascript effects are of course more heavy on the computer compare to native effects. However, doing stuff client-side in Javascript does have other perks as Javascript is a rich interpreted programming language.

IE8, 1.4Ghz/504mb. Yes, a slow computer, but I don't have the issue with every JS animation. I don't know why though.
Also, I've removed your signiture, I decided to just warn you here instead of an infraction.

Have you tried FF, chrome or IE9? That could (and probably should) give you a boost in performance. Different Javascript animations have different loads on the CPU (and GPU). Changing opacity is always more expensive in terms of performance compared to doing translations which in turn does not cost as much as scaling images and so on..

No, I didn't. But if you consider, that's irrelevant, as users don't switch browers when something is slow.

I don't mean to get into an argument, but to me that's the main driver for changing browser, which I've done more then once. There are of course other reasons to stay with a browser..

So, just about everything else works perfectly, and you find one site that doesn't, so you switch browsers? I've only done that when a feature on a site wasn't working that I needed to. But most people won't or even can't do that.
That's what I mean, people don't switch for a single site.
